Direct Energy Responds to Competition Bureau Allegations

Toronto, ON (Dec. 20, 2012) - The Federal Competition Bureau has filed an application with the Competition Tribunal alleging "abuse of dominance" by Direct Energy's water heater rental business in Ontario. Direct Energy denies the allegations and will vigorously defend its position before the Tribunal.

The allegations made by the Competition Bureau question certain of Direct Energy's practices and procedures that are designed to inform and empower consumers. Direct Energy strongly believes that all customers and homeowners deserve to have all of the necessary information for them to make informed and intelligent choices. Such practices and procedures do not inhibit competition.

"The water heater rental market in Ontario is highly competitive," said Len Diplock, Vice-President and General Manager of Rental Water Heater Services at Direct Energy, "Direct Energy supports a competitive marketplace and the benefits it brings to consumers, such as greater consumer choice, stronger customer service, and competitive pricing."

Direct Energy will continue to conduct our business for the benefit of and in the best interest of our customers and other consumers.
