First Choice Power Challenges Texas City High School, Ball High School to 3rd Annual Clash of the Cans

Local students fight hunger while vying for a trophy, invite community to participate in competition

Texas City, TX (10/5/2012) - Leading up to their annual rivalry football game, Texas City High School and Ball High School will be competing on and off the field, Oct. 8 - Oct. 18, in a food drive to benefit the Galveston County Food Bank. First Choice Power will award the district that collects the largest amount per pound of canned food with a trophy (coupled, of course, with bragging rights).

Clash of the Cans is part of First Choice Power's Food First ™ program which aims to provide 1 million meals to help fight hunger in Texas. This is the third Clash of the Cans between Texas City and Ball High School. Last year Texas City won both the food drive tying the score with one win per school; making this year's competition that much more electrifying.

"Texas has nearly 4.6 million residents facing food insecurities," said Shawn Babbs, manager of the First Choice Power local office in Texas City. "We are excited to see students participating in such an important cause and to play a part in uniting communities through the belief that no one should go hungry."

The Galveston County Food Bank will weigh the donations to determine the winner, which will be announced during half-time of the Texas City vs. Ball High football game on Oct. 19 in Galveston. A four-foot tall trophy will be awarded to the winning community, accompanied with each school receiving a $1,000 scholarship to award to the high school senior who demonstrates unsurpassed community service.

Galveston, Texas City and surrounding communities are invited to make canned food and non-perishable food donations at both high schools. To be included in the competition donations must be made by noon on Thursday, Oct. 18.
