Direct Energy Service employees take steps to help fight cancer

Sarasota, FL (January 17, 2014) - Everyday across North America employees of Direct Energy Services work to bring comfort to thousands of customers in their homes. Now these employees will help deliver comfort to those fighting breast cancer. Last October, as part of a program called DE in Motion, more than 3500 employees participated in walks, runs and competitive races. Because of their efforts, today Direct Energy Services will donate $100,000.00 to Susan G. Komen. ®

Here's how it worked. Employees clipped on pedometers which recorded the number of steps they took, or the miles they ran. They logged on to a special website to record their progress. For every mile, Direct Energy Services contributed .50 cents. Employees walked and ran more than 200,000 miles last October.

The funds donated will go into the Susan G. Komen National Treatment Assistance Fund. This fund provides direct financial assistance for qualifying candidates undergoing breast cancer treatment. The money helps pay for items such as medication, child care and medical equipment. The goal of this fund is to reduce the financial and emotional stress that often comes with breast cancer treatment.

"These funds will help us provide financial support for breast cancer patients and their families during a very difficult time in their lives," said Judith A. Salerno, MD, MS, President and CEO of Susan G. Komen. "We're grateful for the generosity of Direct Energy Services employees and management, who are helping to provide a lifeline for breast cancer patients nationwide."

"We are in the business of providing comfort to people in their time of need. When they have a problem in their homes they call us to get their lives back to normal. We are happy to make this donation today to help those facing the challenges of breast cancer, and we are proud of our employees for embracing this effort said Scott Boose, President of Direct Energy Services.

Note to media: The $100,000.00 check presentation will be Tuesday, January 21 at 3:30 CST at Susan G Komen, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244

Uniformed employees representing five of our main service brands will be there along with Karen Murtha. Murtha works for Direct Energy Protection Plans and is a breast cancer survivor. She is a source of inspiration for her coworkers.
