May Is National Electrical Safety Month

Sarasota, FL (May 1, 2014) - Each year electrical safety professionals use the month of May to draw extra attention to the importance of electrical safety in your home. According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International, each year electrical problems cause more than 40,000 home fires in the United States. These fires are responsible for more than 400 deaths and more than one billion dollars in property damage*. Your trusted electricians at Mister Sparky electric offer these tips to consider:

Safety Check Up

Now that the weather is improving do a quick electrical safety check of your home. Make sure all your circuits and outlets are working properly. Check for discolored switches or switches that feel warm to the touch. If you have circuits that trip frequently or fuses that blow frequently, call a professional electrician for help.

Consider adding safety devices

New advances in electrical safety have made the following products affordable and widely used. Consider adding or upgrading smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs,) ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) and tamper resistant receptacles. A qualified electrician can install these for you. We also recommend fire extinguishers in every home.

Do-It-Yourself Safety

Extra caution should be taken with any electrical job you do yourself. Turn the power off to the circuit you are working on at the circuit breaker at the main panel. Also unplug any appliance you are working on.
